Notes on “How to Read a Paper”
1/ Nowadays, due to AI research and development, we tend to read lots of white papers, but there is no guide or no one taught this skill.
2/ This paper introduces a practical and efficient method called Three Pass for reading research paper and doing literature survey.
3/ The Three pass method, guides to read a paper in 3 iterations.
First Pass (First iteration)
- Takes 5 - 10 minutes
- should give you overview of the paper.
- Reading carefully, title, abstract, introduction, and conclusion
- At the end, you should decide to go future or quite reading the paper.
Second Pass (Second iteration)
- We read the paper with great care, but ignore the proofs.
- This is where you write a review to paper
- We should be able to teach about this paper to someone on high level
Third pass (Third iteration)
- This is where we implement the paper, either literally or virtually. We should also think of what we have done with the idea, ensure correctness of data, graph, chart, formula and number.
4/ The original paper also write good about “Literature survey”, and have few good related works mentioned.
